Let me steal a short hour of your time, so you can hear the last 10 years from my time, and come along to be challenged by new works from a now not so young composer who is based in Canberra. I would love to see you there!
Flute Concerto for Sarah Hewat
In 2007 I decided to compose a short flute work for my wonderful work colleague, Sarah Hewat. The flute solo needed a piano to accompany it, so then it evolved into a piano sonata, but then the piano sounds were not enough, so it then evolved into a Flute Concerto. I have composed this concerto over the last 5 years between other projects, until finally we have decided enough is enough, and it should be played. Sarah has devoted so much of her life already towards this work, and it is my great pleasure to accompany her.
Pituri Song Cycle
In 2002 I composed a work for soprano voice and piano that featured some death defying intervals for the poor soprano. Over the years I have handed this work to a multitude of sopranos, who have then quickly decided to hide, to understandably avoid taking on the huge task and time commitment of learning this work. Finally, in 2011, I came across Patricia Parkin, who is the most kind hearted creature one is ever likely to meet. Instead of hiding from the horrific intervals, she was inspired by the challenge, and is currently refining a most difficult and challenging song cycle.
The first of the seven works was performed at the North Queensland Eisteddfod many moons ago, and the adjudicator awarded Alison Murray first prize for her heroic effort. The full song cycle has never been performed before.
Additional Adventures
Other works to be featured in the concert include John Burgess, soloist from the Youtube Symphony Orchestra, performing a new work for electric double bass, and the wonderful Bronwyn Ward (Opera Australia Alumni), who will perform my adaption of 'Fire', one of my favourite poems by Dorothea Mackellar. There will also be a variety of smaller works performed on the recently purchased piano at this great chamber music venue. So come along and enjoy!
